A Sculpture of Sound

At every moment, as we sing, we re-enact creation:

filling the emptiness in our mouths, our bodies,
our hearts and our souls
with echoing resonances of sound ...

sculpting with sound.

So: here is a sculpture of sound, for each of you. Put your hands together, as in an attitude of prayer. Then slowly, slowly, move them apart, feeling the texture of the space between them. Gradually began to turn your hands, as you move them apart, until they face across each other, and enclose a sphere of silent sound.

At first the sculpture is unformed. Craft it now, gently, carefully, lovingly, in whatever fashion you prefer. You can shape it with your hands, rolling your hands over the outside of the sound, to create a smooth surface, a sphere. Or you can use your fingers, to create interesting peaks and valleys in the surface, rivers and oceans, delicate and intricate. Or you can paint with your sight, looking at the sound in its swirling colours and patterns. Or you can design with your thoughts, imagining the potential within this unformed sound, and exploring what is needed to translate that potential into reality.

When you are done, you can separate your hands, and let the sculpted sound become a part of the empty air around it. Or you can gradually bring your hands together again, and take the energy back into your palms, waiting for another day. You can find someone in need of a gift, and pass your silent sculpture freely on to them.

As God did, at the beginning of time:

breathe a sphere of silence into your emptiness
... and sing yourself into existence.
